Culpeper Star Exponent Letter: Maybe Walmart Would Help Battlefield
2009-07-20
Allen D. Smith, Culpeper Having lived in the commonwealth of Virginia for the past 64 years, I am more than acquainted with the Civil War and all of the horrible death and destruction it brought about in this country. I wonder why so many people just cannot seem to let it go. Yes, it is proper to remember the battles and the locations where so many of our young men and women were killed. In my opinion, we are making too much of this terrible time in our history. To hear the preservationists, it seems Wal-Mart is attempting to build its store in the middle of the Wilderness Battlefield. As I understand it, the store is not in the battlefield but on the fringes. How is it that the people opposed to the store think saving adjacent, vacant land is more important than jobs for those of us who do not have one? I would not find it hard to have a Wal-Mart next to the battlefield; it would attract more people to the area, yes. Perhaps it would even attract more folks to the battlefield too. Just my opinion.
