12 useful tips that you should know before traveling and doing business in Korea

During this decade, South Korea should join the top seven richest nations in the world , and yet we do not speak very little of this economic superstar. So what should we know about this country when we intent to travel or make your business there ? Korean society is imbued with traditional Confucian values ( Confucius , founder of the social order typically found in the East Asia ) , even more than China which the system is originated. This implies several things:

1 . Hospitality: the Koreans have a sense of ritual and will do everything to satisfait their guests to show them the value of this relationship in their eyes . They probably expect the same from you. Think in terms of long – term relationship , in Asia the ” one night business ” are exceedingly rare and often synonymous with scam

2 . Humility : the Koreans are very humble appearance – it’s part of the social game – it is quite common to refuse the first time the present that we offer ( insist, of course). Their refusal compliments can generate more misunderstanding, but is also part of the regional label. Therefore , avoid arrogant behavior , it could be misunderstood .

3 . Social equilibrium : the Koreans will do anything to maintain a pleasant atmosphere for their guests. It also means they have the tendency to not say “no” , what you get in return will be confusing or vague answers … or even silence. Then consider a different approach , approach the issue from a new angle , highlighting the benefits or solutions previously neglected . That said, keep in mind that Korean society is hierarchical in the extreme, remember to respect the social rank and authority of managers, especially in front of their subordinates.

4 . Sincerity : the opposite of the problem of “no” , the Koreans also have a penchant for a more or less disarming honesty , sometimes perceived as aggressive . From their point of view it is more to get rid of facts or ” bulky ” feeling , often because they do not know how to express otherwise. It will thus frequently that we see bosses insulting their employees for not working enough .

5. Contact: If you have trouble getting in contact with Korean companies , it will be wise to use a home consultant who will be responsible for establishing the first meeting for you. In general , spontaneous solicitation does not work at all in South Korea , they put relationships first. Indeed, the best way to get an appointment is often through personal contacts or consultants, who have their own network of contacts and be more easily accepted as their role in the business is well established and accepted. At your first meeting , punctuality is very important and a sign of respect not to be missed . You can also send any documents that show you in advance, if possible in Korean ( or English ) so that they can prepare for the meeting in advance.

6 . Business Cards : they play an important role in the ceremonial aspect of the business in Korea , as in China or Japan. Keep them in your wallet , avoid at all costs the back pocket of your pants , it clearly lacks distinction. Use both hands when you give and receive a card. The cards indicate your social rank and function, something that Koreans want to know from the outset because in their society that lets them know how to contact their partner (eg, forms of politeness in the Korean language )

7 . Introduction: use their family name plus function ( eg ” Kim ” or ” Professor Park “) , when the exchange of business cards start . In Korea, your social status is defined by the situation in which you find yourself .  So even if you became very close to a Kim Jong -Un, you must continue to be addressed to him as ” Kim .”

8 . Other presentations and greetings :  In general, a third person will introduce you to people you meet , it helps to formalize your way. Look how well your partner for valuable information . Most Koreans shake your hands . A mark of respect that makes the difference : take your right arm with your left hand when you shake someone hand . It’s the same when you drink.

9 . Gifts: It’s important when you meet a business partner for a long time or to ask a favor . We will not wait for you a present for a first meeting , but it is always seen and a great way to start working on your relationship with your future partners. We often offer office accessories , quality and brand , but you can also bring regional specialties (chocolate, alcohol , cosmetics , crafts) . As for the cards, use both hands to give and receive a gift and do not worry if you do not open the gift in front of you . Traditionally, this is a pretty rude thing to do in East Asia , because of the risk of not appreciate the content .

10 . Pre -negotiation :  Before you even begin the negotiation step, you will primarily earn their trust. The relationship comes first in Korea, and that means you have to work on before we can start meaningful negotiations . Accept all offers to go out and drink as much alcohol as your future partners . Do not be offended sometimes very personal questions they ask you , they are essential in Korea to build your social status. To do business with Koreans you will show them that you are a trustworthy partner , someone who has a good character and easily share with them .

11 . Negotiation : Koreans are often tough negotiators . Be careful to maintain your professionalism at all times , your offer may be rejected because they do not like your manners (irritability , restlessness , weakness ) . Trading is a game of patience after all , they enjoy a good negotiator , otherwise you risk going for a pigeon and lose their respect.

12 . Contracts: as in most countries in the region , the contracts tend to be regarded as a starting point and the Koreans held that this arrangement is flexible so you can make adjustments later.Watch your language : use simple and easy to understand words to avoid misunderstanding . Why some expatriates do not like to return home ?

kiot-dans-le-marche-thanh-haIt is now a little over a year since I live in Asia (China and Vietnam) and I noticed something very interesting among foreigners . The majority of foreigners into two categories

1 ) Foreigners with  “short- term ” stay

In Beijing , where I lived (I guess it’s the same thing in Ho Chi Minh City), there is a lot , among the foreign community , people who do not stay long . University exchange students who stay 3 or 6 months of long-term tourists , people from trying their luck and leave , or expatriates who get rid of local life  and go quickly to their country of origin

2)  Foreigners with ” long-term “stay

I know very few people who stay one or two years abroad . Either people are not living  very longtime abroad , or they stay very long. Most of my friends living in Asia for several years have , for most of them , no desire to return to Europe …

What is the problem?

When immigration is often the result of poor people from trying their luck in rich countries to find a little luck to their needs based response, the european starting in emerging Asian markets respond to a different issue . Their problem is often not find something to eat or find a small job (most French I met abroad are mostly graduated and with professional experience ), but to find a more appropriate response than can be found in their coutntry ( social elevator down … ) . Here are some reasons that why many French living overseas have no desire to return to France .

1 )Interesting Job

When I was in China , I met a friend who got a job as a researcher easier in China than in France . In Asia, if you are young , you can find a good job so …

2 ) Low Purchasing power

In France , immigrants often have a working conditions ( a job,or a salary) lower than local one. In Asia, it is the opposite . A equal job , whites people are better paid. My friend researcher was paid 1,300 euros per month, while his co-workers , as skilled as him, but Chinese, earned the same job for 500 euros per month. It’s unfair but it’s like that. The whites are often better paid than local , for various reasons elsewhere: they know that little white willing to be paid as local , and in the case of China, for example , few Chinese speak English …

On the one hand , foreigners are well paid, often as good or better than in France. In contrast, the cost of living is often low : 2 to 3 times lower in China than in France , 3 to 5 times lower in Vietnam than in France. In the end, the purchasing power of many foreigners is unconventional in Asia …

Take the example of China. Most foreigners I know ( English , researcher, journalists … teachers ) earn between 1,000 and 2,000 euros per month, some up to 4 000 per month. However, in 2010, only 1% of the Chinese win, “officially” over 100,000 yuan – 1000 euros per month. In short, foreigners live very well, and are mostly located at the top of the social pyramid . Of course , foreigners are far from being the richest of China (Chinese wealthy are becoming more common, 2% of Beijingers are millionaires in dollars) but they are far less well- off China …

Vietnam

In Vietnam, it’s the same thing . Salaries are quite low ( wage setting : 300 euros per month). Suddenly, the cost of living is relatively low , as prices adjust to the purchasing power of people ( logic). So there is “sufficient” to win 9,000,000 VND per month ( 330 euros per month) to be part of the upper classes , and 15 million dong per month ( 550 euros per month) to be part of the class A1 , the top of top of the social pyramid and enjoy the “luxury ” life there .

Even with a modest salary scale in French , so you can live very well in Vietnam or in similar countries … For this reason , many foreigners trying their luck in Asia

The reason ? Even with little savings , they can live a long time in Asia, will carry out their own projects . And in the worst case , just give 10 hours of English lessons per week in language schools to locate in the local upper classes. So a friend in Vietnam working 10/15 hours per week working from home for a French company (what live very well ) which gives him time to get his personal side projects as working in a travel agency in Vietnam/ With 2 professional activities, he have a good life in Hanoi.. Pham Quynh is living in Hanoi as  freelancer and writer about Vietnam Holidays for this agency voyagevietnam.co and Asian countries experiences and he is very happy of the cheap and nice ambiance in this city !

3) Lifestyle

France has a great lifestyle , but it is not the only country in the world to have a nice lifestyle . I know many French who love Asia , especially Southeast Asia . For the reasons mentioned above , but also for the art of living .

Vietnam , for example , is:

– 30 ° C average temperature every month of the year

– Some people smiling , confident in the future , not grumpy at all

– Stunning scenery , breathtaking

– 3 000 km of beautiful beaches and tropical

– From the scenery, the exotic

One likes or dislikes, but many foreigners fall in love with this kind of country .

Synthesis

As I said in this article , France remains a great country : a beautiful country ( the most touristic countries in the world ) which has beautiful assets at its disposal : the welfare state , many companies , a lifestyle out of the ordinary … personally, I know that sooner or later I will return move to France , or at least in Europe ….

That said, France has lost some of its luster in recent times  so  more and more French decided to go on an adventure to short- term or for life. Currently , 2 to 3 million French living abroad , and the number increases by 5 to 10% per year.

Certainly, we should not idealize either exotic countries also have their drawbacks :

– Language barrier ( need to learn new language ), cultural differences …

– Nonexistent welfare state

– Problems with visas, tropical diseases …

– A pollution problem , food insecurity …

But as a friend said to me (who runs a maternity of 30 people ), when I came back to France , I felt like everyone else , while in China , I feel different … It could be why many French like to stay abroad. To feel different,   make a test and go on adventure

Why go to Corsica is good for your health? Navigating the Island of Beauty …

Seeking a fresh new destination to explore I quickly turned to Corsica . Rather accustomed to the more distant and therefore foreign country destinations , I had this time the desire to explore the beautiful places in this country and Corsica was a wise choice in my opinion . Its  diversity of its landscape and the multitude of activities on offer have confirmed my choice.

The destination is selected , we still had to get there . Far be it from me to add another vehicle on this small piece of land lost in the middle of the sea, I finally turned to the aircraft.

After traveling a part of the route of the GR20 , I just want to see Corsica from another angle and visit a web site, I had the idea to introduce me in special sailing experience in  Corsica . As I ‘m not the type to improvise day by day tour , I immediately booked my sailing tour  , even asked lots of questions before embarking …

Some shopping later to become a true sailor, I ‘m flying to Paris then  to Corsica and landed in Ajaccio , my base for this trip that lasted nine days , seven days at sea. Bag on my back, I decides to explore this beautiful city that offers me and my wanderings lead me slowly to the port of Ajaccio, which is precisely the starting point of my sea journey. The day already started quietly and ends early enough to be fit the next day, Sunday , to boarding the boat. Preferring contact with people in cozy comfort but impersonal hotel , I turned to a small B & B recommended by my favorite ( The Rough Guide ) guide.

Sunday night was short and many concerns . I wonder why I chose to go to sea as well unless accompanied , I want to clarify that I have no solid idea of navigation. My state of mind on Sunday morning is between apprehension and excitement. Appointment is given to 18h, port Charles Ornano in Ajaccio , so I still have a whole day to get used to the idea that I ‘m actually in navigation  and participate in the life of the crew of a sailboat … What it is, I would like to take this free time to explore a little more Ajaccio and its surroundings. So I decided to take the path of ridges to see a little higher in the city. This trail offers a breathtaking view of the Gulf of Ajaccio and is mostly dotted with many more beautiful one than the other beaches. At the end of the day is swept me with a crew of eight people on a majestic sailboat …

The first week was great and i forgotten all my previous worries . Some great moments, points of view incredible and unforgettable encounters. These are the adjectives that come to mind and memories that I enrolled in memory aboard this ship will remain etched forever. I has been  afraid to stay too long time, but eventually the stay has left us no respite. Between tasks distributed every morning, which we fulfill with good grace and multiple stops that allowed me to discover the beauty of this island that bears his name, the time has flown by at breakneck speed ! I would not say I became an experienced sailor, but I now know the basics of sailing and this experience is really great. For further learning, it also allows you to meet people with whom we must learn to live and work primarily in a common effort to stay the course literally and figuratively .At the edge of the last day of sailing , I almost regretted that initiation does not last a few more days …

The route chosen , based north of the island, which allowed many stops the Porto region , the Scandola and creeks of Piana, so many wonderful places to discover . I particularly enjoyed the natural reserve with flora and fauna of striking diversity. After the Gulf of Sagone, we sailed up Porto , a beautiful city between mountains, sea and bush , I sincerely advise you . I met some lovely people and I saw the same time the most beautiful sunsets of my life …

It is not easy to tell what I saw and experienced as this experience was rich . Without generalizing , the only criticism I can make is that the Corsicans despite their warm most of the time , are fairly remote , the fault certainly the mainlanders who do not always make them good publicity.

However, I come up this maritime stay in Corsica and I can tell you that today , the Island of Beauty has not usurped his identity …

My visit to Tokyo

It’s been a while since I wanted to go to the country of the Rising Sun , which has always attracted and intrigued me . When I broached the subject with friends, he had to keep telling me that if I had to go one day, I should be to limit myself to a few places and go back on several occasions, either take a very long time and take the time to visit each region. I chose the second option, to really focus on one area for a reasonable time in order to really enjoy without hurrying .

So naturally I took a flight to Tokyo. As starting capital , then continue my journey in the provincial areas .

Arguably nothing but the visit to the capital is a whole experience in itself ! I could see the large windows luxury Ginza ( and little affordable … ) in a morning, then go my geek in the neighborhood Akibahara , the holy land of technology enthusiasts , I had bought my camera enjoying reductions Ticket master otherwise I would have cracked , that’s for sure . And that was only the beginning! This is what is amazing with this city : just a few kilometers and you end up in completely different environments. It’s like a different country every time! Some neighborhoods are much more connected “youth ” as Harajuku , where you can see teenagers dressed rather peculiar way , while others are definitely for adults … I think of the Kabukicho area , which is had recommended me , thinking that I would probably spend time in a bar hostess … Nevertheless , it remains a great place to go for a drink late in the night ! .

Ten days to visit Tokyo, this is sufficient . I have only one forward is to go back again to see the local sights. And yet , it was only in Tokyo ! What impatience I have set foot in Hokkaido , Kyoto , Osaka , and many others !

Following the next episode.
